From the Journal

The Last Jhalar-Makers of Amritsar

Three families still hand-knot the pearl fringes worn at Punjabi weddings. We spent a week in their workshop before the wedding season began.

Craft Spotlight — Meenakari

Painting with fire, not pigment.

Meenakari enamel is fired, not brushed dry — each colour added, cooled, and re-fired in sequence. Get the order wrong and the piece cracks.

  1. Ghat

Engraving the outline the enamel will sit inside.

  2. First Fire

The palest colour goes in first, and is fired alone.

  3. Layering

Each subsequent colour fired in turn, palest to darkest.

  4. Mulish Polish

Agate-burnished by hand until the fired glass gleams.

Astral & Today's Rates

Your stone, chosen by your chart — priced as of this morning.

Astral reads a birth chart and recommends the gemstone it calls for. The rate board moves with the bullion market every trading morning. Both live here, side by side.

"I found the goldsmith who made my grandmother's jadau set — still working, four streets from where she bought it in 1962."
